SpaceX Launches First Starlink Direct-to-Cell Satellites

by Warren Seah

SpaceX, led by visionary entrepreneur Elon Musk, achieved another milestone with its first launch of 2024. Late Tuesday, the private space company successfully deployed 21 Starlink satellites onboard a Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base.

Among these satellites, six are specifically designed to offer direct-to-cell services. Aimed at delivering seamless access to text, voice, and data for LTE phones worldwide, SpaceX refers to these Starlink satellites as “a cell phone tower in space” that effectively eliminates dead zones.

In an update shared on X (formerly known as Twitter), SpaceX revealed the initial providers adopting the direct-to-cell technology for global access. These companies include T-Mobile US Inc., Rogers Communications Inc., KDDI Corp., Optus, One New Zealand Group Ltd., Salt Mobile SA of Switzerland, and Empresa Nacional de Telecommunicaciones S.A. of Chile.

This significant achievement by SpaceX further solidifies its position as a pioneer in the space industry, revolutionizing the way we connect and communicate across the globe. Stay tuned for more groundbreaking developments from Musk’s visionary company.

SpaceX’s Busy Year and Milestones in 2023

SpaceX had a busy year in 2023, ending with significant achievements and milestones. The company successfully launched 23 Starlink satellites atop a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida on December 29. This launch marked SpaceX’s 96th Falcon launch of the year.

In addition to the Starlink satellite launch, just a few hours earlier, SpaceX accomplished another milestone by launching the USSF-52 military space plane mission. This mission used a Falcon Heavy rocket and took place at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Furthermore, on December 23, SpaceX made progress with its reusable rocket technology. The company launched 23 Starlink satellites into low earth orbit from Cape Canaveral. Impressively, the rocket’s first-stage booster successfully landed on a droneship floating in the Atlantic Ocean. This landing represented the 19th successful launch and landing of the booster, a first for SpaceX.

The first-stage booster used in this successful landing had been previously utilized in multiple missions, including 13 Starlink launches, as well as the Crew Demo-2, ANASIS-11, CRS-21, Transporter-1, and Transporter-3 missions, showcasing the reliability and effectiveness of SpaceX’s rocket technology.
