Check Your Home for This Stocking Stuffer That Could be a Health Hazard

by Warren Seah

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a recall for thousands of sets of high-powered magnetic balls, which were sold exclusively on Walmart.com. The recall is due to a potential ingestion hazard, prompting the commission to urge consumers to immediately remove these magnetic balls from children’s reach.

According to the recall notice posted this week, over 4,200 sets of magnetic balls were sold at Walmart under the brand name “Relax 5mm Science Kit, Large Hematite Magnets Magnetic Stones Building Blocks” through Joybuy. These individual magnetic balls were found to be too strong and too small, posing a risk, especially for children. The set included a total of 216 small magnetic balls, housed in a clear plastic case and accompanied by a portable tin storage box. Additionally, a black storage bag was also part of the set.

It is crucial to prioritize safety and protect our loved ones from potential hazards. Therefore, if you have purchased this particular set of magnetic balls, kindly ensure their removal from accessible areas immediately.

Warning: Recall of Magnetic Balls

Consumers are advised to cease using the magnetic balls that have been recalled immediately and ensure that they are kept away from children. While no incidents or injuries have been reported regarding these magnets thus far, the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) has disclosed that hospital emergency departments treated approximately 2,400 cases of magnet ingestion from 2017 to 2021. The CPSC is also aware of seven documented deaths related to the ingestion of hazardous magnets, although none were caused by this specific magnet set.

The Danger of Tiny, Powerful Magnets

Have you ever wondered why such small yet powerful magnets can pose such a risk? According to the recall notice provided by the CPSC, when high-powered magnets are swallowed, they can attract to each other or other metal objects, becoming lodged within the digestive system. This can lead to severe complications, including perforations, twisting and blockage of the intestines, infection, blood poisoning, and even death.

Take Action

Consumers who have recently purchased one of these magnet sets may expect direct communication from Joybuy, as they are actively informing all known buyers about the recall. Alternatively, customers can contact Joybuy to obtain a prepaid mailing label for returning the recalled magnet set and receiving a full refund.
